EDU 203

Surface vs. Deep Web Tutorial

Objectives:

Problem-based instruction is designed to:

  • introduce you to real world research situations
  • move from lecture to participatory based learning
  • promote deeper learning of information literacy skills

Goals:

At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • identify an information need from a problem scenario
  • use scholarly search engines/databases to find information on a topic
  • more critically evaluate credibility of information sources
  • understand the importance of developing a search strategy

The Problem Scenario:

The following problem is designed to mirror a real world issue you may encounter in your day to day life.  It will be the basis of our exercise.

The Problem

You are a teacher at a school that is developing a new curriculum focused on the 21st century skills framework. Technology is one of four components of 21st century learning, and you have been placed in a faculty group tasked with exploring the lesson delivery method called “the flipped classroom.” In flipped lessons, the instructional methods are reversed from traditional classrooms; students watch a lesson at home that was pre-recorded by their instructor and then come to class ready to apply the information they’ve studied. While the concept of flipped lessons has been popular in recent years, you are aware that it has been met with opposition. Your faculty group must research the pros and cons of the flipped classroom and present a recommendation to all faculty. You want to support your argument to faculty with reputable research. What position will you argue? What research will you present and why?
