This guide was created as a way for all students at Ferrum College to get basic 'help' with research, tutorials and quick tip suggestions.

Create Your Problem Statement (a.k.a. Thesis Statement) 

Once you have completed your initial background research, outline your paper using your argument or thesis. A paper that incorporates a thesis is not a report or summary of your research. Instead, your work argues your position. This is done by linking your opinions with your research.  A solid thesis will guide your research and provides a clear structure for your paper.

Research is done throughout the project; first to give you background information on your topic, and again to provide detailed evidence that supports your thesis. Research is not a one-time thing. It’s a process that continuously informs and shapes your work.
