Civic literacy is defined as the knowledge and skills necessary for students or patrons to actively participate in democratic processes and engage in civic life (Civic Literacy - (English and Language Arts Education) - Vocab, Definition, Explanations | Fiveable, 2024). The goal of civic literacy is enabling students to understand how the government functions, it emphasizes the importance of being able to discern credible sources of information and seeks to educate students on rights protected by the Constitution (Civic Literacy - (English and Language Arts Education) - Vocab, Definition, Explanations | Fiveable, 2024).

Civic literacy can provide the foundational knowledge to understand political systems and civic duties, where critical thinking enables students to analyze political information critically and make informed choices. Together, they can help bridge the gap between students vague understanding of democracy and misinformation that seems poised to run rampant (Civic Literacy - (English and Language Arts Education) - Vocab, Definition, Explanations | Fiveable, 2024).

A second component to civic literacy is ethical literacy; ethical literacy can be defined as one's ability to articulate a personal ethical viewpoint and to understand the ethical position of others (The Arthur W. Page Center, n.d.). Ethical literacy can also be woven into critical information literacy and media literacy.
