What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service provided by the library.  We will borrow books, chapters, articles and other materials (discretionary) that are not available at Stanley Library.

Who is eligible for ILL services?

        Ferrum faculty, staff, and students.

What does is cost?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is free. 

However, there are fees for damaged or lost items.  For damaged materials, the amount varies.  For lost items, the lending/supplying library will determine the cost associated with replacement at their discretion.

How do I submit a request?

Request items using the ILL Form or by using the “request interlibrary loan” link found in some search results on your citation page.

How long does it take to receive requested items?

       Articles and electronic materials usually arrive within 1-4 days

Books and physical items usually arrive within 4-10 days depending on the location of the lending/supplying library and type of material.

Requests for popular and rare items may take much longer to obtain

How long may I keep the material?

Loan periods are established by the lending/supplying library but generally range from 4-8 weeks.  Check the due date on the wrapper of the book.

Electronic copies are forwarded to your email with a link and password.  Articles will expire after 30 days.  Download the files to your computer for continued access.

Where do I pick up and return materials?

You will be notified by email when your request arrives.  Books and physical materials will be held for you at the Circulation Desk on the mail floor of the library and will need to be returned there as well.  Articles, book chapters, and electronic items will be delivered via email and do not need to be returned.

Can I borrow my textbooks through interlibrary loan?

No.  We do not borrow textbooks.  Most libraries do not own current editions of textbooks.  Additionally, the loan period for most materials is 4-8 weeks *which will not allow for use* of the material for the entire semester.

Who do I contact if I have any questions or problems?

The interlibrary loan office is located in Stanley Library and is open from 8:30 – 4:30, Monday – Friday.  If you have any questions, or if you need assistance, please feel free to by stop by the library or call 540-365-4420.  Your ILL requests using the online forms can be submitted at any time.
